Island Air Restarts Flights to Kauai

Island Air restarts flights to Kauai

Island Air to resume flights to Kauai in March 2016.

There’s good news for travelers wanting to visit the Garden Isle of Kauai. On January 21, 2016, Island Air announced the resumption of flights to Kauai from Oahu. Island Air had terminated service to Kauai back in June 2015.

When Will Island Air’s Flights to Kauai Begin?

The carrier now offers six daily flights as of March 1, 2016. To re-inaugurate Island Air’s return to Kauai, the carrier had offered a limited time promotional rate. This rate was $63 per one way flight for bookings from January 21 to 24. It was also limited for flights taken between March 15 and May 31. Hawaiian Air, Hawaii’s largest inter island carrier, immediately matched Island Air’s promotional rate. We hope both tourists and island residents were able to take advantage of these limited time offers.

This was good news for both local and visiting travelers. But also, the resumption of flights to Kauai created new jobs in on Oahu as well as on Kauai. Reportedly, Island Air said that this new initiative would create 32 new airport related jobs on both islands. As a result, Island Air rejoins Hawaiian Airlines and Mokulele Airlines as local carriers offering flights to Kauai. In addition to offering more local employment, a third carrier on this route should create a more competitive environment. Ultimately, this should help to keep prices on  flights to Kauai lower than if there were only two carriers serving the island.

Future Expansion of Service

One wonders if Island Air will also consider flying to the Big Island one day in the future. If so, it should benefit tourists as well as local travelers. This is because it will give them more flight options as well as offer additional employment opportunities for local residents. If and when they do, we’ll let you know. Stay tuned.
